A Gluten-free Life

Welcome, fellow Celiacs, to the battle against gluten. Gluten, once my friend, now my sworn enemy, is a tricky little fellow. He (or she) shows up everywhere. Everyone is aware of the common foods to avoid: breads, beer, oatmeal. But somehow, gluten seems to worm itself into the strangest places. Did you know the average bottle of soy sauce has more wheat than soy? When you're a Celiac Sprue, every sauce is suspect, every mustard a potential poison. It's overwhelming.

Well, fear no more. This site is about helping Celiacs take their life back. It turns out there is life without wheat, and it's not so bad. With the right information, you can eat your favorite foods (albeit with a bit more care), go out to eat, and generally begin to enjoy food again.

As I've learned to cope with Celiac Sprue, I've used a number of resources to learn what I can and cannot eat. Books, websites, and even an occasional visit to the nutritionist have all been helpful. However, by far the most useful resource has been you. Well, maybe not you specifically, but the random Celiacs I've run into in restaurants and grocery stores. Fellow Celiacs know more about which foods are gluten free than anyone else because, like you, their health depends on making the correct dietary choices. This site seeks to leverage this collective wisdom in an easy to search, centralized manner. Use the food database to learn if your favorite brand of candy bars or potato chips is safe to eat. Or, for those out there with a culinary touch, swap a few gluten free recipes with the community. Soon, you'll realize that getting Sprued can actually lead to a healthier, happier life.
